The 10-th World Champion (1969 -1972), the International Grandmaster (1955), the Champion of the USSR (1961, 1973), the Youth World Champion (1955), a journalist. |

B. Spassky has played chess since the age of 5. He perfected his mastership at the Leningrad Pioneers Palace chess section. In 1953 Spassky made his debut at the International Tournament in Bucharest and took the 4-6-th place (met the requirements for the International Master). At the age of 18 he gained the right to participate in the pretenders' tournament (1956, Amsterdam) and took the 3-d - 7-th place. In 1960 - 1980 B. Spassky successfully played at the World Championship competitions, international tournaments and chess Olympiads.
